Why these numbers
A little coffee science
Why weigh coffee instead of using spoons?
A spoonful of coffee can weigh very different amounts depending on the grind and how full it is. Weighing in grams makes every cup repeatable: if you like it, you can make it exactly the same tomorrow. If you don't have a scale, a level tablespoon of ground coffee is about 5 g.
What does "7 g per 100 ml" mean?
It is the base ratio we recommend for filter methods: about 1 part coffee to 14 parts water. Lower it to 6 g for a lighter cup or raise it to 8 g for a more intense one. The calculator does the math for you.
Which grind should I use?
The shorter the contact between water and coffee, the finer the grind: fine for espresso, slightly coarser for moka, medium for V60, medium-coarse for Chemex and coarse for French press and cold brew. Grind just before brewing so the aroma stays intact.
Which milk foams best?
Whole milk usually gives the creamiest, most stable foam thanks to its balance of fat and protein. Among plant milks, "barista" oat versions perform best. Heat milk to 55–65 °C (plant milks up to 60 °C): hotter milk loses sweetness and texture.
