The Origin of First Light

Santa Elena, Medellín · 1,699 masl

A coffee's character is shaped long before the cup: by the altitude where it grows, the variety that is planted, the care of the harvest and the way it is processed. First Light · Medellín comes from the eastern mountains of Medellín, on the road to Santa Elena.

Altitude

It grows at 1,699 meters above sea level. At altitude, cherries tend to ripen more slowly, and that time favors the concentration of sugars that later shows in the cup.

Variety

Caturra, known locally in Colombia as caturro: an arabica that emerged as a natural mutation of Bourbon in Brazil in the early 20th century and arrived in Colombia in 1952. For decades it was one of the most widely grown varieties in the country.

Harvest and process

Picked by hand and processed as light honey: the beans dry with a thin layer of the cherry's mucilage, a method that tends to add sweetness while keeping a clean cup.

In the cup

Green apple, yellow fruits and sugarcane. Medium roast.

Who grows it

First Light is grown and processed for Casa Enzo by the Monzón family at Hacienda La Casa Grande, a coffee hacienda founded in 1853 that they have worked for generations. Casa Enzo does not grow coffee: we select exceptional lots and bring them to your table. We chose this one for its profile in the cup and for the craft of the people who produce it.
